Why Electric Vehicle Sales Are Surging In The UK

Since Electric Vehicles were launched there has been huge interest in their adoption levels. This year, the Guardian reports that the UK has seen a sudden significant increase in EV registrations - up 56% on last year. So why has this spike occurred? The SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) link this to a couple of key factors. In 2011, there were just 6 EV models available.

For a population of over 64 million with varying preferences and lifestyles, this was a considerable barrier. In 2014 this number has jumped to over 20 models, including sports, hatchbacks and performance vehicles. Secondly, the UK government has committed an overall investment of £500m in the EV market, including infrastructure development and grants.

One such grant offers up to £5000 off pure-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles - unsurprisingly these models have seen the greatest growth. Simple steps to reduce the entry barriers to this market are having a direct effect in the UK, it will be interesting to watch how other countries observe and react.
