Glow In The Dark Roads

Glow In The Dark Roads

A highway in Oss, near Amsterdam is the testing ground for the latest concept in energy efficiency - glow in the dark road markings. If successful, this initiative would eliminate the need for streetlights on many roads, making a huge cost reduction wherever employed.

This would have a particularly welcome effect on poorer economies or areas where installing lighting infrastructure is more difficult. The paint used is 'photo luminescent', absorbing energy from the sun and car headlights, causing a charge of up to eight hours at night time.

Further investigations in this research project include smart paint that will display markings such as snowflakes to indicate that the temperature has dropped below freezing and therefore a danger of ice/slippery conditions. If all of this sounds impressive, consider the notion of self charging lanes for electric vehicles another stage of investigation in this research.

There are many safety / logistical stages to get through before adoption, but the future is looking bright..even after dark. Click here for more info..
