Solar Overtakes Coal Energy For First Time

The Independent has reported on a major milestone in the evolution of solar power. Between April and September this year, solar generated about 10% more electricity than coal in the UK. With over 750k homes in the UK using self generated solar power, the appetite for renewable energy is very healthy. According to the head of the Renewable Energy Association James Court, 'this new data shows its popularity amongst homeowners and business and its falling costs.'

It would be expected that this will reverse somewhat during the winter months as daylight hours are restricted, however technical advances in storage will help to balance this issue in the long term.

Ireland is seeing a significant increase in solar projects with a total of 519 grid applications since the January 2015 according to Solar PV Ireland. We are half way to our 2020 national target of 16% renewable energy contribution.
